  • Hey guys, so I have this system and the only thing I'm not currently satisfied with is the CPU (oh, and I need more RAM but that's a no-brainer). Is it possible to replace it? Here's my current specs...

  • Oh, duh. Yeah, the vid card was the next step after CPU and more RAM. Baby steps... apparently, other people are having the same problem finding compatible CPUs. Hope I don't need to swap mobos and need a new copy of Windows >_<
  • You should be able to upgrade the CPU, I wasn't able to find _ANY_ information on the board other then. The board while made by foxconn was contracted out specifically to OEM's (HP) and as such very little information is available, foxconn's website doesn't even mention the board.

    CPU-Z output details it as an AM3 socket (more than I could find on google). So you won't be able to upgrade to the new hotness AM3+ bulldoser parts, but you should still be able to move upto a AMD Phenom II X4 960T (3.4Ghz Quad Core). a significant upgrade over your current single core 2Ghz~.

    Should you ever need to change the mobo etc, If you have a _RETAIL_ copy of windows 7, you can ring Microsoft and have them help you activate it on new hardware (I've done it myself). If however your PC came with an OEM copy, you're screwed.

    EDIT:
    My understanding is that the lock for windows 7 generates a hardware ID based on your motherboard, graphics card, CPU, memory etc. Too many upgrades and it considers it a new PC and they'll lock you out even if you keep the mobo. (Still not a problem if you have a retail version).

    Edit: While I'm at it, would this rig support dual vid cards? Not looking for two monitors, just the extra power. Would I have to stick with ATI, or could I make the switch to nVidia?
  • Its a slightly more involved. Many people feel they're going to break something when they first seat a heat sink, but don't worry. The CPU should come with a boxed heat sink with pre-applyed thermal paste which makes it much easier for beginners. You can actually break pins on the CPU / socket fairly easily if you don't follow instructions, but if you're careful an take your time, you'll be fine.

    I know people pushing 50 years old, with little computer experience doing this stuff. So don't let it worry you.

    As for the dual graphics cards, I'd have to have more information on the board, a picture would help. Specifically of the slots available. To be honest there is little reason to go with a multi-GPU system if you're only gaming on 1 monitor. My single GTX 470 which is now discontinued runs everything i've thrown at it including Skyrim on high settings without an issue. An I game at a resolution of 1920x1080. An you should be able to go nVidia or ATI/AMD for your graphics card if your mobo supports dual graphics cards, so long as the cards you get are the same model.

    Incase you ment running two ATI 3000 series cards, forget it. I don't think those cards support cross-fire and even if they did, it would still suck.

  • So I'm reviving this thread because I have new questions. Since I posted this the only thing I managed to do is upgrade to 6GB of RAM. The next step for me before the CPU is my GPU upgrade... I found out I have two PCI-e x1 slots, and supposedly one x16 [though I can't find it] and was thinking about picking up imagethis card... what do you think? My main game is SWTOR, though I'd like to play some Skyrim or something. Don't need OMGAEWSOMEZ quality, just normal.

    EDIT: On the topic of the x16 slot, in the space said slot should logically be there are just a bunch of gold dots in a row about the length that an x16 would be and two small pin holes. There are also two rows like this next to my RAM slots in the size and shape of RAM slots. What do those mean?
