Game of Thrones Discussion
  • Hey Army! I know we have a lot of Game of Thrones fans here at NooBTooB so I thought I'd make a topic for some good discussion. Thoughts, feelings, speculations, insight, and just general ideas on the show and the books can be shared here. Just remember to use spoiler tags!

I heard about the show a while back from my friend and my girlfriend and I have been following the show ever since. I haven't read the books so I have no idea what's going to happen next. What are your guys' thoughts after this week's episode? A lot is changing in the story, and I'm trying to speculate on where the series is going to go next.
  • I read the books about a year ago (or at least all the ones released so far) and found it to be an excellent and engrossing series. I love the fact that there are depths to all the characters, and that no character is sacred as far as living or dying. Though as the books went on and more and more characters were introduced I found I prefered hearing about some more then others. So the chapters on the ones I really enjoyed were deep and engrossing, and the ones on the others were not as enjoyed.

I don't have HBO so I'll have to wait for the show to come out on Netflix, but from the bits I've seen I think they did an excellent job in the casting! Some of the actors are almost EXACTLY how I pictured them!
  • Excellent.

Really liking the TV show so far, its just such a cool story. I started reading the books and I think the way the story is written is perfect for character progression. So often you get these stories with one main character and everyone else is just an extra, and yea you get a few supporting characters you like but nothing on the same scale as Game of Thrones. Its a testament to the series the way the story twists and turns and you see less of some characters then others because every character is really likeable and they all have their villains who are really hateable. Joffre being a key example of how well you can build someone to be a truly hateable character.

And I have to say, out of all the fantasy universes Iv known of Game of Thrones has one of the best. The history of the land and the way the history is told just gives you solid images of characters. Its very easy for tv shows to just go "hes doing this because of this" and it doesnt really make sense, in Game of Thrones its like your going through their thought process as characters are doing things. And while normally that would make a show predictable, Game of Thrones still manages to throw curveball after curveball without ever doing anything that doesnt make sense.
  • Yeah the character's are all very interesting and it's very unsettling knowing that any character can be killed off just like that. You grow to really appreciate some of the characters and the story can alter so drastically and quickly that I'm always wanting more by the end of each episode.

I also really appreciate how well they've developed the world. The lore behind the series is so deep that, just like Lord of the Rings, it feels almost like some lost recollection of events that actually happened a long time ago. I can't wait to see what's next.

Also, I hate Joffrey. Like, I really hate him. I really, really hate him.
  • I pirated a couple episodes to check it out, and have watched some clips on youtube. If it comes out on ITunes or something I'll definitely buy.

It's an excellent take on the books (GO READ THEM RIGHT NOW! ADWD IS OUT IN JULY!!!!!). There is one big thing I miss, and that's the POV aspect. The show is in third person, so we don't get any access to the character's thoughts, which is one of the most important parts of the series. Analyzing events from different viewpoints leads to a ton of subtle conclusions that can be drawn (e.g. R+L = J). That said it's a show, and given that they only have an hour to sum up a ton of content, I think they do quite well. It was probably a wise choice to not have a constant first person narrative going on anyway.

Just glad they got excellent people to play Arya and Tyrion (along with almost everyone else). Dinklage's accent bothers me a bit, but he more than makes up for it through sheer acting prowess. A lot of people have said that Harry Lloyd does a ton for Viserys' character, and I agree. Arya and Viserys in the show are better than I imagined them when reading. Like Viggo with Aragorn.

From the few episodes that I saw, the only actual content that bothered me was the first sex scene between Drogo and Daenerys. In the books the scene is semi-romantic, but the show makes it really uncomfortable with Dany being a pretty unwilling participant, failing to show Drogo's more sensitive side (though from what I understand this is shown better later on). One guess is that in the book Drogo warms Dany up first, and there simply isn't a good way to convey that in the show without it becoming a porno.

In interviews, Martin has said he derives a lot of his ideas from real-life history and legend. Here's a fun one, and not really a spoiler, but I'll put it in spoiler tags anyway. It relates key characters in Robert and Ned's rebellion to a real-life epic.
    Spoiler:

Robert = Menelaus, Rhaegar = Paris, Lyanna = Helen
  • Just started watching the show. Wow. This is defiantly one of the best shows I have seen in a very long time. I love how they made Joffrey the character you love to hate. Death to the boy king!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • i love this show sooo much :D

I had thought about this when Iv been watching the series. Not that particular one you mentioned but things like The Wall and its connection to Hadrian's wall defending the south of England from the Saxons in the north. The relationship between the Northern lords and the Kings in the south isnt too different from that of Kings of England and the Northern Barons. The Dothraki seem kind of like a mixture of the Vikings and the French riders which seems like some homage to England's invasion in 1066.

Im sure there are more links, and I think it works well. If people can make connections between the history of the world and actual history it helps make the story feel more real.

And while Im on that topic, thats one of my favourite things about the series so far, they start it off with seeing the White Walkers and then they spend ages cementing everything in reality so the idea of the White Walkers seems like it does to people in the world, a far distant memory. And because of how real the story feels you can see why people refuse to believe that any form of magic or myth can exist in it, even the Dragons are buried out of site and out of mind.
  • I fear spoilers so haven't read any other comments.

The show is absolutely phenomenal, so deeply engrossing. It started off fairly good but has become increasing more impressive as the weeks have gone on. It's hard to decide whether Game of Thrones or The Killing is my favourite show on TV at the moment. Watching them back to back is absolute TV heaven. I need to pick up the books, love the contrast of the different regions. I imagine the books give an even greater depth and insight. Can't wait for the inevitable battle at the wall, when the creatures from beyond the wall are properly introduced.
  • Having read the first book, I love to see other people's reactions to the show (those who haven't read the book beforehand). My favorite part of the books is how fragile every character is. George RR Martin is rocking some balls of steel to just chop off characters whenever he wants, and that's my favorite part. I hate stories that are always happy and frolicking and hold your hand and make sure you're never too upset with the plot. Martin scoffs at that idea, takes your heart, and wrenches at it until you run into a corner and cry. I love that about him and I'm going to be starting the next book (Clash of Kings) on monday. I am excited!
  • Does anyone know when the next season will be out?
  • I';m a massive fan of George RR Martin, Read all the books to date, and I can see why he's got bogged down. This would be very daunting to write.

Anyone who has read the books and wants something nearly as deep I would suggest the Wild Cards series. Start at the start though!!!

Haven't seen the series but I'm gagging for it.

    not til 2012 apparently :(
  • Bought the Bluray collection of season 1, loving it but only 10 episodes!

Anyway analyzing it, the main theme seems to be about mothers protecting their loved offspring, no matter the cost!
I like the imp, he can say the stuff nobody wants to hear because he is the imp.
  • I started on the books a few weeks ago, Martin has revived my love for reading. They did send the show on TV here, but I didn't discover it before it was too late. Will most likely get the bluray or DVD collection though, since I'm so thrilled by the books, I don't see why not.
  • Loved the first season.

Game of Thrones season 2 has lot more magic elements.

Going to the desert where dragon girl is a bit to secluded. Kind of took you away from where the drama/action was happening at least for me and my coworker.

The end of episode 10, it was kind of expected. Weird looking guy at the end was blah. The highest note was the end of episode 9 for me.
  • i love this TV show, but i can't describe my feel when i read this in book shape. i found it a excellent series i ever read in my life. i really appreciate their mind creation about world. awesome series ever
  • i watched the tv show but i can describe the feeling when i read it. specially i appreciate them how beatifully they create the world. awesome series i ever read
  • I bought the first season during Christmas break back in December and wow, this series is beyond amazing. I don't have HBO, so I was kind of shunned from this series. Man I was missing a lot. I can't wait til Season 2 drops, I think it's next month? Anyways, I love the actors, the stories, just the world in general. They have me hooked for sure!

Let's be honest, I can't complain and the ladies in it either. Haha.
