I know that sometime ago, when I created mine (a few years back) I was unable to use the upgrade option, due to my credit card (or rather my billing address) being UK...

This is true, the client is not the problem, it's actually creating a US account that's the issue. To setup that US subscription, you will need to give them a retail CD key, for a US copy of the game...

You just need to buy a US subscription and you can play on US servers if you change a file in your WoW folder.

I'd be interested in participating. If we start from scratch on US servers we could...

Stitch and I have tried a few times now to get our games in, we've both tried hosting, and each time, it gives us a "Unable to participate" error.
